Anki - A Flashcard Program That Utilizes Spaced Repetition

Anki is a set of applications which utilize spaced repetition and flashcard (learning card) to make remembering things better. The Anki application set includes Anki (for Windows, macOS and Linux), AnkiMobile (for iOS), AnkiDriod (for Andriod) and AnkiWeb (for browsers), of which Anki and AnkiDriod are open source. Anki ecosystem also enables shared add-ons and shared decks which makes Anki easier and more powerful to use.

Anki is a program which makes remembering things easy.
Anki is content-agnostic and supports images, audio, videos and scientific markup (via LaTeX) and the possibilities are endless.

AnkiMobile is a mobile companion to Anki, a powerful, intelligent flashcard program that is free, multi-platform, and open-source.
Sales of this app support the development of both the computer and mobile version, which is why the app is priced as a computer application.

And by the way, "Anki" (暗記) is the Japanese word for "memorization", according to Wikipedia.

One Notice for Chinese Users

There is also an unofficial (verified by real Anki official) AnkiChina official (at least they declare to be) which indeed helps to understand and use Anki.

Except for the point they mislead users by using official tag for promoting, they are still very helpful. If you are Chinese or interested in Chinese language, it is still recommended to use the information, resources or services from AnkiChina since they do help, but probably with some caution.

Base on the information I have collected, AnkiChina helped providing Anki Chinese translation and many related tutorials for Anki on the website http://www.ankichina.net/.

Personal opinion: they have made a reasonable win-win business around Anki by promoting Anki, providing Anki services and charging a fee, such as IM group entrance fee and video tutorial fee.

The Specialties of Anki

It is the reason why I personally like Anki so much that would like to write an introduction article for Anki.

  • Anki desktop client is open source
    • open source can self-prove to be clean concerning user privacy data
  • Anki separates application data from application program
    • the separation enables data (Anki decks) share-able between users
  • Anki supports add-ons
    • add-on design makes Anki flexible and powerful for customization
      • and for developers, add-on in Python makes life really easier
  • Anki uses web technologies for card making
    • web technologies are famous for the open nature and easiness which also makes Anki modern, colorful, flexible and powerful
  • Anki official provides a channel/website for sharing add-ons and decks
    • official maintained resource hub helps to world-wide communication
  • Anki enables data syncing between devices and supports mainstream platforms including macOS, iOS, Windows, Andriod and Linux
    • cross platform but do not break learning process
